The Cairns Region

The region is located in Australia's Wet Tropics and is adjacent to the magnificent World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest to the west and north and the Coral Sea and World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to the east. These attributes combine to make Cairns a world renowned tourist destination. Cairns liveaboard diving trips depart daily from the Port of Cairns to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The region is the gateway to the nearby important Atherton Tablelands, Wet Tropics rainforest, the Daintree rainforest and the outback Savannah region beyond the Great Dividing Range.

Availability of Cairns Liveaboard Diving Trips

What Cairns Liveaboard Diving Trips are Available?

Essentially there are two different types of Cairns liveaboard diving trips. Firstly there are cruises (3,4 or 7 days) to the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea. This is an upmarket cruise for dedicated divers looking for the ultimate in reef diving experiences. Included in all of the packages for this dive trip is a low level flight across the Great Barrier Reef which gives guest a clue to the vast expanse of the complex reef ecosystems.

The second type is 3 day 2 night cruise that visits outstanding reef systems closer to Cairns but does not proceed further to the Coral Sea. These are high quality cruises that also do not compromise on food, linen, diving equipment or service.

Which Reefs Do Cairns Liveaboard Diving Trips Visit?

Destinations included in the specialised Coral Sea Cairns liveaboard diving trips such as North Horn, Cod Hole, Ribbon Reefs and Osprey Reef are pristine, unvisited by day dive cruises and rarely seen by humans at all. Of course each of these destinations itself contains many dive sites. It is only possible to see a few of these sites on a single visit.

The Ribbon Reefs alone offer numerous stunning dive sites that contain an extremely diversified amount of coral and marine life. This ranges from giant clams up to 2.5 metres across, with stunning hard corals and unlimited reef fish. Pelagic fish varieties like trevally and barracuda abound. See Mackerel hunt juvenile fusiliers swarming in schools with a magnificent backdrop of plate corals. Drift along walls and drop-offs with batfish and rays through towering pinnacles covered with beautiful corals and clouds of small reeffish.

The 3 days 2 nights Cairns liveaboard diving trips that depart daily from Cairns have access to many dive sites on Thetford, Milln and Pellowe reefs on the Great Barrier Reef in closer proximity to the port at Cairns harbour.

Some are coral gardens where beautiful butterflies, angels, parrots and maori wrasse carry on with their daily activities. Some include huge colonies of clown fish, which have remained as the most memorable experience for many divers and are certainly one of those great places for underwater photography. Many sites have vertical walls where schools of huge pelagics cruise by continuously.
