Cairns Advanced Course
Evening Before Departure
You have two options for arranging your dive gear for this cruise:
- Visit the dive shop (corner of Shields & Grafton Streets) the evening before departure (recommended) or
- Visit the dive shop at 6:00am on the morning of departure.
Dives 1 and 2 - The first 2 dives are recreational dives - an introduction to scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Take your time to become re-accustomed to the underwater environment and brush up on a few diving skills.
Dive 3 - Following a knowledge review and a comprehensive briefing from your instructor you will begin the underwater navigation component of the Advanced Course using compass and features of the natural underwater landscape to further develop your underwater navigating abilities.
Dive 4 - Night Dive: A night dive on the Great Barrier Reef is an exceptional experience. Encounter sleeping parrot fish, turtles and a variety of marine life that you will only see at night. During tonights dive you will complete a simple navigation exercise as part of your Advanced Diver training before your instructor takes you on a guided tour of this fascinating night time environment.
Days 2 & 3
Dive No 1 - Deep Dive:As part of your Advanced training you now learn how to safely undertake dives deeper than 18 metres, the depth limit for a certified open water diver. With instructor supervision you will dive to 30 metres where many experience the early signs of nitrogen narcosis. You will also be shown some of the other effects created by increased depth and therefore increased pressure. You will also note the effects of colour absorption with increased depth.
Your three core training dives are now completed and you have 5 day dives remaining. The last 2 dives of your Advanced diver training, are designed to introduce you to other interesting areas of diving which you may wish to learn more about in the future.
Choose from the following elective dives to complete your course:
Underwater Naturalist: Learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and its intricate ECO system on this dive. You will learn how to identify the main families of fish from Damselfish to Trigger fish and how to identify the different types of coral. If you find this type of information interesting you should en sure that you don't miss the opportunity to go to Reef Teach the night before your trip departs.(Additional costs apply).
Underwater Photography: This is a basic underwater photography course involving correct pre and post dive camera care methods and some basic techniques for getting the most out of underwater photographic opportunities. If you do not have your own camera you can hire a digital underwater camera at a cost of AUD$35 per dive. During this dive you will cature a substantial number of shots that you will be able take with you when the cruise ends.
Search and Recovery: On this dive you will learn the basics of underwater search and recovery methods. You will learn how to use search techniques incorporating various search patterns with compass or rope to locate objects and also how to retrieve small objects from the ocean floor using a lift bag. Some seamanship is also learnt by employing correct methods of securing objects for transport to the surface.
Boat Diving: Diving from a boat is infinitely different from diving from shore and there are also a variety of boats all requiring different water entry and exit techniques. On this dive we will endeavour to teach you a number of skills to make boat diving safe and simple.
