Help to Protect the Great Barrier Reef
You can help to protect the Great Barrier Reef without joining anything or paying any money.
In the last few years the Great Barrier Reef has has been endangered by a number of political decisions by the Queensland State and Federal governments who are under constant pressure from the coal and gas industries to expand ports or undertake projects that could potentially damage the corals and marine life to the point where they cannot recover. The reef needs to be protected in a much more secure way than by relying on the integrity of a few politicians. Virtually, by definition, politicians are exactly the wrong people to be entrusted with such a huge responsibility. The only real weapon that we can invoke against corporations and governments is numbers and the greater the diversity of these numbers the more impact they will have.
We know from our website statistics that thousands of divers from most countries in the world visit our website each year. To be able to influence our government whenever they decide to dump dredging spoil, allow chemical run-off, create mega ports or allow mining on the Great Barrier Reef we need to show them the level of concern from all over the world. Facebook has become a powerful weapon for projecting public opinion and if we can succeed in showing the spead of deep concern about the future of the Great Barrier Reef and the protective measures that need to be in place, we can influence the politicians into making sensible conservation decisions about the interaction of industry and the environment and put the protection of the Great Barrier Reef above all other considerations.
